Insomnia happens to be a common problem that many people suffer from, especially nowadays with technology & internet connectivity around us 24/7. Insomnia is called chronic when the person has sleep problems thrice a week, lasting for at least a month.

As stated earlier, there can be health issues or no health issues behind insomnia. Some of the causes of acute insomnia are:

  • Physical or emotional discomfort
  • Significant life stress like a death, a job loss, a move, a divorce etc.
  • Interference in normal sleep schedules like jet lag or shifting from day to night shift
  • Factors that affect the sleeping environment like light, noise, humidity and extreme temperatures that hinder/interfere with sleep
  • Medications for colds, allergies, high blood pressure, depression and asthma also interfere with sleep

To treat insomnia, first of all you need to have a proper sleeping routine. Remember our body/sleep is not an on-off switch. It needs time to unwind. Start the ritual an hour before going to bed like a hot bath, massage, soothing music etc. Turn off lights and devices like laptops and mobiles for a proper sleeping environment. Here are few natural remedies that may help you with insomnia:

  • Cherry Juice:

Some people take alcohol to sleep but it disrupts the normal sleep cycles that makes you get up in the middle of night. If you go for cherry juice instead, it can help you get a restful sleep since it is high in melatonin. It is the hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycles of the body. Those who drink cherry juice twice a day are able to fall asleep faster and better.

  • Milk:

Having a glass of lukewarm milk gives a calming effect on the body. This helps you fall asleep easily. Milk contains the amino acid-tryptophan, triggering the serotonin production that aids you in getting a better sleep. You could also mix wild honey and cinnamon powder in milk. Also, try massaging your toes with milk as it induces sleep.

  • Nutmeg:

Nutmeg is an effective remedy for insomnia. Nutmeg is enriched with myristicin which helps in getting to sleep faster. It works as a tranquilizer, as well. Take a pinch of nutmeg powder and mix it in fresh gooseberry juice. Consume it three times a day. Nutmeg not only resolves insomnia but indigestion and depression problems, too.

  • Lavender:

Lavender happens to be a gentle strengthening tonic for the system. Few drops of lavender oil poured in a bath before sleeping are recommended for people with insomnia. Furthermore, the lavender oil is used as a massage oil or compressor. You could simply pour few drops of lavender essential oil on a tissue and inhale it to solve insomnia. For a bath add 3-10 drops and for skin massage, add 10 drops to your carrier oil like coconut oil. You can drink lavender tea also.

  • Chamomile Tea:

Chamomile is a healing and effective herb. Drinking chamomile tea before bed improves sleep quality. Chamomile contains flavonoid apigenin which has a calming effect on the brain. It is a simple, but effective home remedy for insomnia.

  • Aniseed:

Take 375 milliliter boiling water and add one teaspoon of aniseed into it. Simmer this mixture for about 15 minutes. Strain before adding wild honey and milk to it. Sip aniseed tea before bedtime to get your quality sleep.

  • Bottle Gourd:

Bottle gourd happens to be an excellent remedy to trigger sleep. Take bottle gourd juice and add sesame oil to it, in the same proportion. Massage your scalp with this concoction before you go to bed. You can also add bottle gourd to your diet.

  • Saffron:

Saffron happens to contain a mild sedative power that helps to treat the problem of insomnia. Take about 3-4 strands of saffron and soak them into a cup of warm milk. Before going to sleep, drink this warm drink daily.

  • Poppy Seeds:

Poppy seeds are enriched with calcium, carbohydrates, minerals and B complex vitamins. Take 1 teaspoon of poppy seed/oil before you go to bed to solve your problem of insomnia.

  • Wild Honey:

Wild honey works well to alleviate insomnia. Wild honey has sedative, relaxing and hypnotic effects that induce one to have a sound sleep. In a cup of water, mix 2 tablespoons of wild honey and drink it before you sleep.
